ALEKS - TOS Review
Math is NOT a favorite subject in our home. In fact if it weren't for my husband Rod, my kids would suffer in this area of our homeschooling.
I've heard of ALEKS from our state homeschool convention that I attend every year in May. I hadn't really checked them out in detail, it is math afterall.
We do math in our home, but only because we have to! If I can make THIS part of our learning fun, then I feel that I've made a huge accomplishment.
With ALEKS I succeeded! This is huge for my family! I honestly can't say enough good things about this math program - WE LOVE IT! I will never be able to go back to our "old" math workbooks again. My kids have seriously gotten into little fights over who gets to do their math first on the computer.
ALEKS stands for Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course.
When you first log on your student will take a ALEKS Assessment of 20-30 questions (no multiple-choice questions). Each question is choosen on the basis of your students answers to all the previous questions. Each student, and each set of assessment questions, is unique.
After the the assessment, ALEKS developes the course, knowing which topics your student has mastered and which topics he/she hasn't. The student's knowledge is represented by a multicolor pie chart. From the pie chart, students are offered a choice of topics to learn from.
What do my kids and I love so much about ALEKS math?
Lets start with the Pie Chart. Each lesson begins on this page and allows you to keep track of your student's progress. It also gives them choices of what they want to learn each day. The pie will give the student a few options of what they can choose to work on within that area. The darker park of the pie shows what your student has already mastered from that topic. Once a pie piece is filled they are done with that section of math.
The Course Products page is simply awesome! They have thought of every math topic you can think of and students can work through each topic more independently then most programs.
What else do I love? It keeps track of everything for me, it's online and can be done anywhere, no textbooks! ALEKS emails student reports about every two weeks. It will give your student questions that need to be reviewed. There is has a report section where I can see my children's pie report, attendance, and state standards. This section is also great for homeschoolers like me that like to print out pages for portfolios. If your student doesn't understand something right away, the program will explain it. Students get immediate feedback from their work.
Each of my four children that have been working with ALEKS have really liked it better then any other math program we've ever tried. We are very happy to say that even one of our children that really struggled with math is doing so much better then she was just one month ago!
ALEKS courses are available for grades 3-12 and beyond.
